The State College Police Department is investigating a rape that was reported at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The incident is the 11th sexual assault to be reported in the State College area since Aug. 27 and the third sexual assault to be reported this week.
The incident is listed on the police log as a rape. Police said the rape involved a known person.
Police could not confirm where the incident occurred, the gender of the people involved or if any involved are Penn State students. Police could not say when the assault occurred.
The investigation is ongoing, police said. Police could provide no further information.
Audra Hixson, assistant director for the Center for Women Students at Penn State, said the number of sexual assaults reported for this semester isn’t unusual, and it is a good sign that they are being reported.
Hixson said that because sexual assaults are underreported, it is hard to draw a correlation between the number of sexual assaults that happen and the number of sexual assaults reported.
She said a conservative estimate for the number of sexual assaults reported to the number that actually happen is about one in 10.
