University officials have notified former Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley that his contract will not be renewed after it expires in June, Penn State spokesman David LaTorre said today.
“Due to this being a personnel matter, we cannot comment further," LaTorre wrote in an email.
Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in an interview with the Daily Collegian on Aug. 23 that Curley’s status as a Penn State employee was under evaluation.
Curley requested to be placed on administrative leave after being charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse in relation to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case.
Curley’s request was granted by former Penn State President Graham Spanier last November.
Curley served as Penn State’s athletic director beginning in 1993. Currently, David Joyner serves as the acting athletic director. To date, Penn State is paying both Joyner and Curley. In August, Erickson said he planned to keep Joyner in the position, saying he is doing an “excellent job and my intent is to keep [him] on during my tour as president.” Erickson plans to retire in 2014.
Former Interim Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz is also charged with perjury and failure to report suspected abuse in connection with the Sandusky sexual abuse case. Schultz has returned to retirement.
Jury selection for both Curley and Schultz’s joint trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 7, 2013.
Former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted on 45 of 48 counts of sex abuse on June 22. Sandusky was sentenced on Oct. 9 to a minimum of 30 years in prison, a sentence not to exceed 60 years by senior judge John Cleland.
