Sandusky letters of support released

In the letters of support written before his sentencing, Jerry Sandusky, along with his wife Dottie Sandusky, attack police, prosecutors and their son as all having played a part in orchestrating the conviction of Sandusky on charges of child sex abuse.

Dottie Sandusky wrote in the letters obtained Thursday from Centre County Court Administration that her husband is a “very up front man and a man of very high morals,” and that he always put others before himself.

“Like all of us he has his faults, one is he cared so much for people always wanting them to reach their potential,” Dottie Sandusky wrote. “Jerry is not the monster everyone is making him out to be.”

Dottie Sandusky also wrote that she never saw her husband doing anything inappropriate with any children, and that if she did, she would have stopped him.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 counts of sexually abusing boys he met through his charity, The Second Mile. He was sentenced Tuesday to serve 30 to 60 years in prison.

Dottie Sandusky also wrote in her letter that police lied about Sandusky and that they are getting away with the lies, while also saying the press has been “unbelievable” throughout the case.

“Like all of us he has his faults, one is he cared so much for people always wanting them to reach their potential,” Dottie Sandusky wrote. “Jerry is not the monster everyone is making him out to be.”

The Sanduskys’ adopted son, Matt Sandusky, was also criticized by Dottie Sandusky in her letter. Dottie Sandusky wrote that her adopted son would often resort to lying and stealing from the Sandusky family, and that while he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he has refused treatment.

Matt Sandusky told prosecutors in June that his adoptive father abused him as well.

Matt Casey, Matt Sandusky’s attorney, could not be reached as of press time Thursday.

“We still love him and want the best for him, but because of his actions we cannot express this to him,” Dottie Sandusky wrote.

In Jerry Sandusky’s letter of support written for himself, he states he believes the media, prosecution, people he was convicted of abusing and Penn State all orchestrated his conviction.

“Everyone protected themselves,” Sandusky wrote. “Penn State…protected their image…the police were protected. Media protected their jobs and ambitions. Prosecutors protected their jobs and egos.”

Speaking of the people he was convicted of abusing, Sandusky said he has been blamed for their “failures and shortcomings.”

Sandusky ended his letter by saying he has lost his faith in fairness and that he will ask for a second chance, as he has given many himself.

State College attorney Matt McClenahen said that the letters of support written by Sandusky and his wife neither helped nor hurt his sentence, considering the gravity the charges he was convicted of.

McClenahen also said that the letters of support won’t directly affect any appeals that may be filed.

Both of Sandusky’s attorneys Joe Amendola and Karl Rominger have said they plan to file appeals within the 10 days after Sandusky’s sentencing.
