THON 2013 will be centered around the theme Inspire Tomorrow’s Miracles.

The Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon announced its theme for this year’s event during Saturday’s Homecoming parade.

THON Overall Chairman Will Martin said that the overall committee came up with the theme at the end of August.

Martin (senior-communication sciences and disorders) said that this year’s theme will serve as a look back at what THON has done over the past four years, and for students and volunteers to start looking toward the future.

“There are miracles everyday. Whether it’s something as small as a child being able to get out of their bed or a child going into remission,” he said.

Martin said that the theme can relate to everyone no matter how they are associated with the THON community.

“I really like the theme because they are three powerful words that can be shared with the community. It’s to inspire them to work a little harder toward THON’s next miracle,” he said.

Cat Powers, overall public relations chairwoman, wrote in an email that every year’s theme is set to “encompass the visions and goals for the THON season.”

“This theme signifies an innovative and inspiring future ahead for Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital,” Powers (senior-public relations) wrote. “We look forward to even more miraculous developments in the future that bring us one step closer to finding a cure to pediatric cancer.”

Last year’s THON theme, Brighten Every Journey, signified easing the journey of each Four Diamonds family.

THON revealed its first theme, “Dance for Those Who Can’t,” in 1976. From then on, the committee has worked hard to select themes that it believes explains why groups continue to THON, as previously reported.

Greg Park is a member of THON through his fraternity Sigma Tau Gamma. He said he wasn’t too sure about the theme because he doesn’t know how it will play out over the year.

“I’m excited though to see how it all turns out in the end,” Park (sophomore-biology) said.
