University police officer struck by vehicle

A Penn State Police officer was struck by a car Tuesday morning while on bicycle-patrol along East Park Avenue, according to the State College Police Department.

Officer Jennifer Williams, 27, was riding her police issued bicycle on patrol on the 600 block of East Park Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. when she was struck by a Hyundai Elantra driven by Walter Browne, 56, of Bellefonte, police said.

Williams was life-flighted to Altoona Regional Health System Trauma Center, police said.

Police could not comment on Williams’ current condition.

Police said there were no apparent traffic violations but the investigation is continuing. An accident reconstruction specialist will help with the investigation, but police did not say when the specialist would be coming.

Police said they do not believe the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

State College Police were the first to respond to the scene.

Police also said they were not sure of how the vehicle struck Williams.
