Penn State World Campus student among casualties in Libya

A Penn State World Campus student was among the four causalities in Libya earlier this week after a mob attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers confirmed.

Sean Smith, a student who was taking online courses in information, sciences and technology, was an information management specialist with the U.S. Foreign Service, Powers said.

“This is obviously a tragedy for his family, Penn State and the nation,” Powers wrote in an email.

Smith was stationed in the Netherlands, but was deployed to Libya to assist their IT efforts, she said. He was also an air force veteran.

Plans to honor Smith during the Penn State vs. Navy football game Saturday are underway, as well as plans to recognize him during World Campus graduation celebration in December, Powers said.
