Penn State Police investigated a suspicious package found outside of Beaver Stadium Monday, only to find the package was filled with Penn State clothing and memorabilia.
Penn State Police and a hazmat team were called to the scene to inspect the suspicious package, left unattended at Gate E at the stadium. Hazmat found nothing of danger inside the package, which was taken away after police declared the area was clear shortly before 3 p.m., Penn State University Spokesman Reidar Jensen said.
Jensen said the package first raised concerns after a “substance” was found covering the outside of the package. He said police later determined the substance was detergent that leaked onto the outside of the package when it was in transit.
Penn State alerted University Park students of the suspicious package at about 1:30 p.m. via PSUTXT.
Penn State Police also shut down a portion of Porter Road that goes by the stadium while the package was being inspected, but re-opened about an hour later after the package was deemed safe.
