Faculty wise to use Freeh Report in the classroom

Students are making the world their classroom as Penn State professor has turned PHIL 119: Ethical Leadership into a class that addresses the Freeh Report.

This class is a great opportunity for students to educate themselves on a subject that directly relates to them.

Learning about these ethical issues and implications in a more detailed manner yields a more educated student body, while presenting them with real world issues they have felt the first-hand effects of.

People on the outside of the Penn State community often reference the Freeh Report, among many other ethically related opinions.

This class gives students the opportunity to understand, in detail, the inner workings of a report like this, as well as issues regarding the events spurring the report. Many students, and outsiders, are aware of the general jist of the Freeh Report and any details surrounding it.

But, a class like this allows a chance for students to form an educated and informed opinion on the matter.

The outside world has often condemned the university and criticized the academic aspect of Penn State.

However, that should be silenced. Students, who have been involved solely for the fact that they attend Penn State, are taking it upon themselves to learn from their higherups mistakes.

The students and professor of PHIL 119 Jonathan Marks, are learning from the mistakes of others, and that is something to be applauded.

This report hits close to home for each and every student attending this university. There are lessons to be learned, and that’s exactly what this class facilitates.

It does not shy away from this looming dark cloud over the university.

Instead, the students are using this class as a place where an emotional and controversial issue can be turned into a rational forum to discuss opinions and express different aspects of the Freeh Report, ethical issues and its implications in an efficient manner.

This is a class that students should take advantage of.

There is a good chance that you will be put in a situation where you’ll need to make a tough call.

You will have to deal with an ethical dilemma, and a case study such as this one, can teach you invaluable lessons that you will be able to connect with on many different levels — as an emotional student and a critic.
