Jerry Sandusky brick removed

A brick with Jerry Sandusky's name on it located in State College's Centennial Walkway was being removed Thursday afternoon.

The brick read "Jerry Sandusky The Second Mile Founded 1977" and was one of many bricks in Centennial Walkway — which runs between Pugh. St. and McCallister St. and connects College Ave. to Calder Way — to feature many prominent community members.

Pat Daugherty, owner of the Tavern, a restaurant located on Centennial Walkway, said he had seen people taking pictures of the brick earlier in the week, and added he made a note to call the borough about it. But before he did, he heard from Tom Fountaine, the State College Borough Manager.

"I got a call this morning from Tom Fountaine, and he says, 'I think we should remove [the brick],' " Daugherty said.

A few Tavern employees were using a variety of tools to get the brick out of the ground. A plain brick will be put in to replace it, and Daugherty said he was told to give it to the borough once it was removed. The brick had been damaged after student-run blog Onward State posted a picture of it earlier in the week and some people tried to remove it themselves, according to Daugherty.

Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was found guilty on 45 of 48 counts of child sex abuse in June.
