Earlier today local artist Michael Pilato removed the halo above Joe Paterno’s head in the mural “Inspiration,” located across from The Deli, 113 Heister St.
Pilato added the halo on January 23, the day after Paterno died. He will often add a halo to the likeness of an individual in his murals when that person dies.
Pilato said that too many people have been interpreting the halo in the wrong way, compared to the other halos he has added to the mural.
“I just had to do it,” Pilato said.
Pilato also added a blue ribbon onto Paterno’s jacket. Pilato said he spoke with Paterno before his death and told Paterno that he wanted to incorporate a blue ribbon on his image, and Paterno agreed.
“He said he was so sad about the survivors and said he wished he had done something different,” Pilato said.
Everything else is the same, “but we really can't forget what happened,” Pilato said.
