With elections for new board members taking place, I believe that there also needs to be a change in the Board of Trustee’s structure. I feel that any future state governor should not hold an “honorary seat” in the Board of Trustees.
I say this because after the recent information presented about Gov. Tom Corbett’s involvement with the Board’s decision on the evening of Nov. 9, 2011, there’s a good chance that any influence of a state governor in a university’s affairs could be to serve their own political interests. Corbett’s involvement with the BOT was minimal since he was elected governor of Pennsylvania.
In the end, the governor should not be allowed to hold an “honorary seat” because political interests will end up overriding in doing what’s truly right.
