For nearly a week, eager customers flocked to the newly opened Jersey Mike’s Sub Shop, as the shop offered sandwiches for a $1 donation to the Four Diamonds Fund, the organization that benefits from the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.
Jersey Mike’s, 128 S. Allen St., sold “in the neighborhood” of 8,000 subs, Jersey Mike’s Subs owner Matt Patterson, Class of 2003, said. Because of the sales, nearly $8,000 was donated to the Four Diamonds Fund.
Jersey Mike’s Subs plans to sponsor captain meals during THON weekend, and every dancer will be given coupons for buy-one-get-one-free meals, Patterson said.
Patterson said he wanted to get people through the door of the new shop and support a good cause.
The Four Diamonds Fund coordinated promotions on Facebook to support the sub shop charity drive, Suzanne Graney, Four Diamonds Fund director, said.
“Jersey Mike’s handled this from the beginning to the end,” Graney said. “The Four Diamonds Fund reached out to the committees involved with THON.”
During the promotion, the line outside Jersey Mike’s Subs remained close to a stand still.
“It’s been crazy. I never thought people would wait in the snow in line for 45 minutes to get a sub,” Patterson said. “I would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us.”
A few days after the promotion ended, patrons sat under a white surfboard as they ate at blue and red plastic tables.
“It was delicious. It’s different than every other place around here,” said Zach Juneau(junior-marketing). “It’s actually like a real sandwich.”
Josiah Newman (graduate-agricultural and biological engineering) said he enjoyed the atmosphere inside the sub shop.
“It was a definitely unique experience, and I think they did a great thing to raise money for THON and give away food,” Newman (graduate-agricultural and biological engineering) said.
Patterson said Jersey Mike’s Subs also plans to sell subs this summer at Medlar Field at Lubrano Field, home of the State College Spikes, a minor league baseball team.
