Suspicious package at Old Main a science project

The Centre County Bomb Squad determined that a suspicious package found on the Old Main patio at about 1:15 p.m. today was an electrical meter made in a high school science camp project. Police cordoned off the area with yellow emergency tape at about 1 p.m. after discovering an opened cardboard box on the ledge of the southeastern side of the Old Main patio. At about 1:15, Penn State University officials sent out a PSUTXT alert that said "suspicious package found on Old Main patio. Police on scene. Avoid area". Old Main was not evacuated, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said. At about 2 p.m., two police officers approached the box, picked it up and walked away with it. The box contained a conductivity meter, which was made by high school students in an Eberly College of Science summer camp, Powers said. The meter appeared to be a small black box with a small electronic number display and wires protruding from it. The box was accidentally left on the patio when a group of high schoolers who made the project put the box down to take a picture in front of Old Main, Powers said.
