Penn State student Garrick Stafford was sentenced to three years probation in a plea agreement for his involvement in the 2008 downtown riot following the Penn State football team's away victory against Ohio State.
Stafford, now 20, was charged with felony counts of riot, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property after police said he took a streetlight from Beaver Canyon after Penn State beat Ohio State in Columbus.
After a photograph of Stafford carrying a streetlight surfaced, he acknowledged his actions but said he was not responsible for knocking it down, though he did bring the $3,512 streetlight back to his room before throwing it into a dumpster, according to court documents.
Stafford's attorney, Anthony DeBoef, said his client was given probation because he did not actually commit any of the property damage.
"He was simply there at the scene," DeBoef said, adding that Stafford was sober when he picked up the streetlight that was knocked over by someone else.
