Political comedians entertain at State Theatre

Despite their differences, liberals and conservatives are both fair game when The Capitol Steps takes the stage.

The comedy group put on its newest show "Obama Mia!" on Saturday at the State Theatre, 130 W. College Ave. Both two-hour show times sold out.

The Capitol Steps has made fun of American government and media for nearly 30 years, group member Andy Clemence said.

"We have poked fun at sordid scandals and stupid politicians," Clemence said during the show. "And, quite frankly, what could be better?"

The group's State Theatre show focused on several big-name politicians, including Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton. But it also joked about celebrities and recent scandals, including the recent Tiger Woods scandal.

Much of The Capitol Steps' comedy centers around parodying well-known songs like "Eye of the Tiger," "American Pie" and "Let it Be." This style of comedy makes for a funny and interesting experience, said Chris Lee, a Boalsburg resident.

"I thought that it was hilarious," Lee said. "I think they highlighted the absurdity of the current government system."

Lee's favorite was the ending song, a parody of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" that bashed Fox News and other media outlets, he said.

One of the staples of The Capitol Steps is showing off "lirty dies," the group's homegrown language. The system works by switching the first syllable of one word with the first syllable of another, as Clemence demonstrated in a monologue towards the end of the show.

The group actually sells instructions on how to speak "lirty dies," Clemence said, but it comes with a warning.

"You might thart to stink like that," he said.

Tom Daubert, a State College Borough Council member who has seen the group before and always enjoys the group's "lirty dies" segments, said he likes that the comedy stays current with government happenings. Indeed, the group makes staying up-to-date a priority, Clemence said.

"If anything big happens, you can run to our Web site and see what rhymes with it," he said.
