Sophomore Tyler Saltsman has left the Penn State wrestling team, coach Cael Sanderson confirmed Friday, making him the fourth wrestler to leave in the last three weeks.
Saltsman felt he wasn't given an opportunity to compete as a member of the team and didn't want to invest so much time in the sport if he couldn't get a chance to regain a starting spot, he said.
The 133-pounder defeated redshirt freshman Bryan Pearsall in the Nov. 5 Intrasquad Dual before dropping his bout in the Lions' opening dual meet at Lehigh.
Saltsman said he believed he'd get a chance to compete at the Virginia Duals but instead watched as Pearsall dropped all four of the bouts at 133.
The coaches were still unsure who would get to wrestle at 133 in the upcoming Big Ten opener Jan. 22 against Illinois, Saltsman said, which led to his decision to leave the Nittany Lions.
