The Interfraternity Council (IFC) has announced it will prohibit recruits from attending greek social events where alcohol is present this semester.
It's part of a "values-based" strategy for spring recruitment, IFC President Max Wendkos said.
One goal of this new plan is to provide for the safety of all students participating in the recruitment process, Wendkos (senior-marketing and psychology) said Sunday night.
"With this new recruitment program we are looking to one, ensure safety of our recruits, and two, provide for our fraternities a recruitment of students that would reflect the values that our organizations were founded upon," Wendkos said.
In a unanimous vote, the IFC presidents decided to implement these new changes. The IFC hopes these new regulations will encourage chapters to "increase the exposure of potential new members to the core values in Fraternity life," including brotherhood and virtue, according to an IFC press release.
If found in violation of the new policy, fraternities will be held accountable, Wendkos said.
"We have developed a system of fines and social repercussions to discourage our chapters from violating the new policy," he said. "Furthermore, recruits that violate the policy will not be eligible for spring 2010 recruitment."
