Folk musician Judy Collins led college students in song during the turbulent 1960s. Now, she'll be playing for the current generation.
"College students are always smart and curious, and it's always fun for me," Collins said about playing college towns.
"A lot more young people are getting familiar with my work because of the Internet."
Collins will bring her timeless music Tuesday, Dec. 15 and Friday, Dec. 18 to the State Theatre, 130 W. College Ave., in a concert with Christmas flair.
Tickets are sold out for Friday's show, but still available for Tuesday's show for $40.
Mike Negra, executive director for the State Theatre, said the tickets sold out in the first week of November. Because of this, Collins and the venue worked out an agreement to add another show for the Tuesday of that week.
"So we'll have the show, say goodbye -- and on Friday, we'll say hello again," Negra said.
Collins said she will play Christmas carols along with her large repertoire of songs.
Performing since 1959, she is best known for her renditions of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," the Stephen Sondheim song "Send in the Clowns" and the Christian hymn "Amazing Grace."
She said she is thankful to continue to tour after
50 years of being in the public spotlight.
"It's a lot of work, a lot of travel and a lot of interesting things," she said.
"I feel very blessed to be able to do it."
Negra said Collins has performed with Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
"She hasn't been front and center, but to someone who's interested in American folk music and how it got started and in terms of where its going, I think Judy Collins would be very interesting," Negra said.
Collins said she has seen all kinds of people turn out for her shows and she believes her music can transcend demographics.
"It's a pretty mixed audience -- everything from people who are much older than I to infants," she said.
