Songwriters club to host open mic

The Penn State Songwriters isn't wasting any time in getting its name out.

Although it's only a month old, the group will hold its first open mic event tonight in the Pollock Cultural Lounge. Each performer will receive 10 to 15 minutes to perform, depending on participant turnout.

Songwriters President Brian Walker hopes to set the event apart by the content of its performers. Walker (junior-psychology) wants to foster a relaxed attitude to attract participants.

"We're encouraging original music over cover music," he said. "I think people think they're not good enough, but if that's what it sounds like, then sweet."

Maura Westurland, co-founder and vice president of the Songwriters, is looking forward to hearing performers' personalities coming out through their music.

"It'll be the actual expression of a situation that someone has been through," Westerlund (freshman-communications) said.

But the open mic night isn't just about music. The atmosphere of the night is pretty much a free-for-all, Walker said.

"We don't discriminate at all," Westerlund said. "If someone gets up there with half a song or even a poem, that's totally in the rules."

The members of Songwriters also emphasize their openness to new performers and members.

"This isn't a club where we say you have to meet set requirements," Walker said. "Don't be shy."

Miles Wright, the Songwriters' treasurer, is just one of the club members who plans to perform tonight.

Wright, who plays the guitar and flute, said he enjoys improvising music, especially when he can play with others.

Organizing its first open mic didn't come easy for the group. On top of jumping through hoops and trying to find a suitable room, several club members spent their Sunday evenings posting flyers on as many bulletin boards as possible.

"We heard [the event] was the same night as the SOMA open mic, so we want people to know that they can do both," Westerlund said.

And like most organized club events, there is always the opportunity to meet new people.

"It's a great thing to be surrounded by people like you," Westerlund said. "It makes a big school like Penn State a little bit smaller."
