Farmers market relocates indoors

The fruits, flowers and sweets at the State College Downtown Farmers Market will be moving indoors for the first time ever beginning Nov. 27.

SoZo, 256 E. Beaver Ave., will host the indoor market from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday with 13 different vendors, State College Downtown Improvement District Director Jody Alessandrine said. The indoor market will run until the regular downtown market opens again in the spring.

"There was a real demand," Alessandrine said. "A lot of the vendors have suggested it for a couple of years now."

Alessandrine began talks about moving the successful Friday market indoors in 2008 and hoped to have something in place by last January, but growers said they needed more time to prepare.

SoZo director Will Snyder said an indoor market has been in place in Boalsburg for some years now, so when Alessandrine approached him to host the indoor farmers market, he saw it as a great opportunity.

"It's another great amenity to be able to offer to people," he said.

"It gives people an opportunity to go downtown, and it helps local vendors for the entire year and not just six months."

The last day for the outdoor display on Locust Lane is Nov. 20, said Barrie Moser of Moser's Garden Produce in Centre Hall.

"There is something special about the freshness of items here," he said, holding up broccoli he picked Friday morning. "It allows people to get involved with farmers and have a local market.

Patricia Graberek and Lily Cushenberry, are both used to the "buy fresh, buy local" ideal.

"It's nice to come and get fresh produce," Graberek (graduate-industrial organizational psychology) said, whose favorite market items are fruits and vegetables.

Cushenberry (graduate-industrial organizational psychology) prefers the desserts. She said she has to go through the entire market before she can make a decision on what to buy, and her choice will remain difficult with the indoor market, with at least five baked good vendors signed up, Snyder said.

Even though the outdoor market will end Friday, Graberek was happy to hear it will still be around when it moves to SoZo -- although many of her favorite vegetables may be out of season.

"That's sad," she said. "But at least the market will still be around."
