Wrestling team loses in first meet under Sanderson

The Cael Sanderson era began with a 23-14 loss to Lehigh Friday night.

Sanderson started Tyler Saltsman at the 133-pound weight class, Colby Pisani at 141 and David Erwin at 174. All three lost their bouts - Saltsman to No.12 Matt Fisk by major decision, Pisani to No. 18 Seth Ciasulli by fall and Erwin to unranked Robert Hamlin by major decision.

With Penn State leading Lehigh 14-10 at the midway point, the Erwin-Hamlin showdown proved to be the momentum shifter as Lehigh won the following three matches.

Justin Ortega moved up a weight class to 184 pounds and battled No. 12 David Craig for three periods but lost by a 3-1 decision.

No. 8 Brad Pataky defeated John McDonald by major decision to start the meet. The other Lion winners were 149-pounder Frank Molinaro, No. 5 Cyler Sanderson at 157 and No. 9 Dan Vallimont at 165.

The last match of the night featured No. 20 Cameron Wade against No. 6 Zach Rey. With the Lions trailing 20-14 heading into the bout, Wade needed a pin to tie the match. But, Rey beat Wade 5-2 and solidified the Lions' first lost.
