Women's soccer advances to second round in rout

Going into the locker room at halftime, the Penn State women's soccer team held a two-goal lead that should have had the coaches happy.

But head coach Erica Walsh told her team it had only played at a B level, and the Nittany Lions responded with three second half scores en route to a 5-0 drubbing of Colgate Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Behind senior forward Katie Schoepfer's second career hat-trick, the Lions dominated the ball in both halves.

Junior forward Dani Toney and freshman midfielder Jackie Molinda added the other goals for Penn State, which fired 34 shots, 14 on goal. The Lions added two assists each from seniors Nikki Watts and Melissa Hayes as well as helpers from Jess Rosenbluth and Rachel Lamarre.

Earlier in the evening, the University of Virginia tied St. John's in double overtime, but advanced after winning 3-1 on penalty kicks. The Lions will meet the Cavaliers at 1 p.m. Sunday on Jeffrey Field in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
