Asylum sponsors hardcore Thanksgiving Throwdown

If Penn State students are ready to "throw down," this Saturday's Thanksgiving Throwdown show may just be the perfect opportunity to do so.

Sponsored by Asylum, the show will feature metal-influenced hardcore bands Red Knife Lottery, Girlfight, Annihilus and Vision to None.

"We're expecting to reach capacity," Asylum member Jarrod Williams (senior-sociology) said. "The atmosphere should be pretty intense."

The event will be held in the Pollock Rec Room, which club members expect will give it a distinct feel.

"In the bigger venues, the artists are up on stage, but in the Pollock Rec Room, they're right there with you," Asylum President Josh Krantz (junior-mechanical engineering) said. "It's a lot more intimate."

This intimacy often breeds a good concert, Williams said, and he thinks concerts in the Pollock Rec Room are always a great time.

And that great time isn't just for fans, either.

Jesse Husted, a Penn State Altoona student and the bassist of Vision to None, said he is extremely excited to play the show.

"We haven't been in the State College area to play, and we feel like it'll be a good opportunity to get more fans," Husted (junior-psychology) said. "We're looking to have a great time on stage."

Williams said he believes that most artists coming to Penn State are mainstream, so events like Thanksgiving Throwdown are more than welcome.

"It's good to see some good underground music coming to Penn State, and that's what Asylum thrives on," Williams said. "Hardcore is a little less understood than other types of music. You have to have a taste for it to thoroughly enjoy it."

But exactly how much throwdown will be thrown down Saturday night is debatable.

Husted, who said he thinks the apex of modern music is the combination of breakdowns and synthesizers, expects there to be some movement in the crowd during the show.

"I've listened to the other bands, and there's definitely gonna be some moving around," Husted said. "Like every show, I expect the crowd to be moving around to our stuff as well."

And although the event is advertised as a throwdown, Krantz hopes that the hardcore dancing is kept to a minimum.

"We had some injuries in the past due to that," Krantz said. "Just have fun, come out, hang out and listen to some hardcore music."
