Police: Football weekend leads to excessive crime

Although there wasn't a repeat of last year's downtown riot following the Penn State-Ohio State football game Saturday, police said there was plenty of crime to keep them busy throughout the weekend.

State College Police Lt. John Wilson said more crime was anticipated because of the sheer mass of people visiting State College for the football game.

"It was very, very busy," Wilson said. "A huge crowd came into State College this weekend."

And with that crowd came fights. An individual and his father tackled and punched a Penn State student during a fight for a beer can cozy during a tailgate Saturday at Stadium West Lot, police said.

The student suffered a broken nose, and charges are pending against the assailants, police said.

Downtown, police said a vehicle was rummaged through and a rifle was stolen.

A .300-caliber Savage rifle was stolen from an unlocked vehicle at about 4:32 a.m. Sunday from the 300 block of East Foster Avenue, police said. The stolen hunting rifle is valued at $600, police said.

Several assaults occurred during the weekend as well, police said.

Police said a man was assaulted by an unknown man while walking along the 400 block of East Beaver Avenue at about 2:16 a.m. Sunday. The man suffered a broken nose and was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center, police said.

In another incident, a man was transported to the hospital with a broken tooth and broken jaw after being punched in the face at about 3:44 a.m. Saturday at 138 S. Atherton St., police said.

In a separate incident, an unknown person went into an unlocked 925 Bellaire Ave. apartment before 5 a.m. Friday and caused injuries to another individual's face and neck, police said.

Another man was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center after he got punched in his left eye while trying to break up a fight near South Pugh Street and East Calder Way on Saturday night, police said.

And tensions were still high after the New York Yankees won the World Series Wednesday night.

A Philadelphia Phillies fan and a Yankees fan got into a fight at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on the 400 block of South Pugh Street, police said.

The Phillies fan kicked the Yankees fan in the face, who was hospitalized for nose and teeth injuries.

Police said there were also many citations given out for underage drinking, in addition to a few DUI citations.

"There were a lot of alcohol-related incidents, but there were no major problems," Wilson said.
