Icers win sixth in a row, sweep Navy

A week after dominating West Virginia at home, the No. 6 Penn State Icers (10-1-1) went on the road against Navy and completed their third straight weekend sweep.

After winning a close game, 6-4, Friday night, Penn State came within four minutes of a shutout in Saturday's 5-1 victory.

Despite the lopsided score Saturday, both games had big plays in the final minute.

On Friday, it was sophomore Paul Daley's empty-net goal with 44 seconds left to put the game away and Saturday, it was a controversial play in the game's final moments that fired up both teams.

With senior Marek Polidor coming in on a breakaway in search of a short-handed goal, Navy goaltender Eric Anderson came out of the net and delivered a hit on Polidor.

The clock expired on the play, as players from both teams came together, but were separated before the routine handshake between the teams at center ice.

In net on the other end for the Icers Saturday night was freshman Dan Ivanir, making his first career start for Penn State. He held the Midshipmen scoreless until 3:55 left in the game, when a shot slipped past him to end the shutout bid.

Ivanir got the start in Saturday's game after junior Teddy Hume picked up the win Friday night, recording 18 saves on 22 shots.

The Icers take to the road again next weekend for a two-game series against No. 7 Rhode Island, with games at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
