Icers

Icers start to find momentum

It hasn't always been pretty, but somehow, they've gotten the job done.

Starting with a tough win against Ohio in overtime, the Penn State Icers have won six of their last seven games and four straight.

Coming off of its two best performances of the year, Penn State believes it's starting to get some momentum behind it.

The only blemish during this span was 4-3 shootout loss against West Chester, a game Penn State believes it should have won and gave away.

It was a lesson learned that hasn't been lost on the Icers.

"Our guys realized that we just can't show up and play," Icers coach Scott Balboni said. "We've gotta come disciplined. We gotta come with our game plan."

Balboni feels his squad did that this past weekend. The Icers dominated West Virginia, controlling each game from start to finish both nights and extending their winning streak.

With that momentum and small winning streak, the Icers hope they can carry it through two-week road trip, starting this weekend against Navy.

"We started out a little sloppy and now we're starting to come along as a team," forward Tim O'Brien said. "Hopefully we can keep that success throughout the next couple weekends on the road and build off our streak of victories and get some momentum coming in back home before the break starts."

With the Icers being 10 games and five weeks into the season, O'Brien believes it's time for the team to start making a strong push into the second half of the season.

Penn State faces two divisional opponents on the road over the next two weeks in Navy and Rhode Island before heading back home to take on Navy at home before the holiday break. O'Brien feels that winning those six games before the break would be a major step for the team going forward.

The team has continued to go forward despite injuries to key players. Player after player has fallen to the ice or limped off into the tunnel and onto the injured list, none of them have slowed the Icers down.

The veterans on the team credit this to the increased output from some of the younger players who have stepped up to fill the holes in the Penn State lineup.

"They're stepping up and stepping into their roles sooner than we thought, which is always a good thing," O'Brien said. "It's always a good thing. These guys have come a long way, and they're showing it out on the ice and giving it their all every chance they get, and that's something that's crucial for this team."

But if those freshmen don't keep up their production, and the team loses its focus, and Penn State does stumble over the next stretch of games, it believes it'll be able to rebound.

Missteps like that are just part of a season, forward Paul Daley said

"It's part of adversity. It's part of the game," Daley said. "A team knows that it's gotta bounce back right away, take care of things and get back on track."
