Gallery hosts tea time with ceramic art exhibit

While most people enjoy tea simply as a hot drink, there are others who have made it an art form.

"The Art of Tea," an exhibit of teapots, runs through Nov. 28 and is hosted by the Creative Oasis, 133 E. Beaver Ave. The Oasis will host an artist reception tonight that will offer a chance for the public to meet the artists.

The event doubles as a chance for the featured artists to sell the pottery they have created and put on display.

Charles Hughes, one of the co-founders of the Creative Oasis, has several pieces on display in the event. Part of the inspiration for the exhibit came from his wife, he said.

"My wife loves tea and all things tea," he said. "The exhibit serves as a way of blending form and function in tea related materials."

Hughes will have six practical teapots on display and for sale at the show, but other artists have chosen to create pieces purely for aesthetics. Cheri Yarnell, another featured artist, has worked with pottery for more than 20 years. She is a supporter of the Creative Oasis and hopeful for the event's success.

"It's a teaching space for a variety of art forms," she said. "So I hope they have a really good turnout."

Jake Johnson, a full-time potter originally from Illinois, also offered pieces for the exhibit, including teapots, tea bowls and sugar bowls, all of which will be for sale, he said. The Creative Oasis was originally a private family-owned business before Hughes and the other co-founders bought it, Hughes said.

"It was too good a thing to let close," he said.
