Weezer could play at PSU

If students want some "Pork and Beans," they may be happy to hear that votes are being cast to bring rock band Weezer to Penn State.

Penn State is in fifth place, behind schools like the Florida State University and University of California-Santa Barbara.

The contest was discovered by John Khuu (senior-information systems technology), who saw that a friend of his at Florida

State was part of a Facebook group encouraging students to vote.

Khuu immediately called his friend Rick Knowlton (senior-energy, business and finance), despite the fact that he was still in class.

"It'd be awesome to see a free Weezer come to Penn State," Khuu said. "If we actually did win, everybody would go nuts."

After deliberation with Knowlton, the two decided to make a Penn State Facebook group, urging people to vote.

Students must have a Facebook profile in order to vote.

"I invited 200 people on my list, and boom, it just blew up," Khuu said.

The Facebook group has already grown to more than 3,000 members, which has resulted in just under 2,000 votes.

Florida State University, the leader, has more than 5,000.

Penn State votes are continuing to climb, and many students are excited about the opportunity to bring the band to State College.

"A couple of my friends introduced me to the band, and I pretty much hooked on to it," Denny Dwyer (sophomore-finance) said. "Now they're coming out with new stuff, and I think it's great personally."

Dwyer, one of the fans voting, believes Penn State has the power to reel the band in.

"We've got to keep putting it out there that this is a free concert for Weezer," Dwyer said. "We

definitely have the manpower to do it."

Claire DiGiacomo, entertainment director of the Student Programming Association (SPA), hadn't yet heard of the event. But she thinks Rec Hall might be the perfect fit as a venue.

"The BJC would be a good spot, but it may be too big and Alumni Hall may be too small," DiGiacomo said. "The problem with Rec Hall is that it's so hard

to get because of all the sporting events that go on there."

But for Knowlton, it comes down to one thing -- Penn Staters have to try.

"We gotta do this. We have the capability to," Knowlton said. "Even if we fail, at least we can say we tried."
