Jim Tressel said Tuesday he doesn't know which of his reserve kickers will be used this weekend against Penn State after Ohio State starter Aaron Pettrey tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
"If we had a game this moment, Devin [Barclay] would kick off and kick field goals because I haven't seen Ben [Buchanan] for a week," Tressel told reporters at his weekly press conference. "But we have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practice."
Pettrey got hurt covering one of his kickoffs on Saturday in the Buckeyes' 45-0 win over New Mexico State and will miss the rest of the regular season.
Pettrey led the Big Ten in scoring with eight points per game.
Ohio State listed Barclay or Buchanan as the No. 1 kicker on its depth chart, released on Monday.
With an ill Buchanan sidelined, Barclay came in for the injured Pettrey in Saturday's game, going 1-for-3 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra point attempts.
"Between Devin and Ben, we've got to step up," Tressel said. "I'm not sure any of us expected that, but that's part of football."
Lynch contacts Big Ten
Indiana coach Bill Lynch said Tuesday the Hoosiers have contacted the Big Ten offices regarding the officiating in their 42-24 loss at Iowa Saturday.
"Obviously we've looked at it and we have had contact with the Big Ten office and great confidence that they'll handle it appropriately," Lynch said on his weekly teleconference. "It's funny though. In coaching by about noon on Sunday you're so wrapped up in looking at the things we didn't do well in the game that gave Iowa a chance to comeback."
The controversy from Saturday's game surrounded a pair of Terrance Turner touchdown catches that were ruled incomplete.
Both were reviewed. On the second one, Turner was initially ruled in-bounds but officials overturned the call.
"We spend all our time and energy there as a coach," Lynch said. "I don't really like reviewing things that are out of our control, because in some ways it gives your kids an excuse."
Iowa preps for Kafka
Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said he expects quarterback Mike Kafka to play this Saturday against Iowa.
Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz planned on preparing his team for Kafka regardless.
"We have to work on the assumption that Mike will be ready to play," Ferentz siad. "If he's out there, I'm sure they wouldn't put him on the field unless he's ready to go.
"So we have to assume that he is gonna be ready to go and healthy enough to do all the things that he does well, which is he's a good thrower. He's also a very dangerous runner."
Kafka left in the second quarter of the Wildcats' game against Penn State Saturday with an apparent leg injury and did not return.
