Voter turnout remains stagnant

Polls have been open for about eight hours now, and precinct judges say voting traffic has been slow.

Rob Ghormoz (junior-political science) was one of several members of Penn State College Democrats who stood outside the Paul Robeson Cultural Center's Heritage Hall early Tuesday afternoon, handing out slate cards listing all the Democratic candidates up for election.

"It's still early," Ghormoz, who is the group's secretary, said. "We're expecting it to pick up."

Pat Usher, the judge for Precinct 33 (West Campus) said he had seen 16 voters as of 1 p.m., which was more than the precinct had for the last local election all together.

Usher (junior-political science) said he wasn't sure how many students were going to come to vote for candidates for positions on the municipal and school boards.

"We'd be surprised if we got to 50 [voters] for each precinct," said Barbara Shockowitz of State College, the judge for Precinct 25 (South Halls).

Precinct 24 (the back end of East Halls) had only seen three voters as of 1 p.m., even though they have 1,659 students registered.

Nick DiNardo (junior-political science), a student working at Precinct 24, said most students seemed to be voting straight ballot, which means voting all Democratic or all Republican. He added one student told him she visited the polls because she earned class credit for voting.

Anthony Fiore (sophomore-division of undergraduate studies) said he mainly came to vote for Centre County District Attorney, and that he chose Democratic candidate Stacy Parks Miller because he feels she will help students more than Republican incumbent Michael Madeira, who he thinks has a vendetta against students.

The voter turnout at the State College Borough Building has been significantly higher with 64 voters as of 2 p.m. Poll workers estimated that about 1/3 of that number was students.
