Election Day

Students must have voice at polls

Around this time last year almost everyone had election fever.

Barack Obama sought to make history by becoming the first black U.S. president, and Sarah Palin was aiming to bring a new dynamic to the Republican Party.

Now, it's the first Tuesday of November, which means it's Election Day once again. Though our local elections may not possess the big-scale drama of last year's presidential election, these local elections are no less important to our community.

In fact, issues like the nuisance ordinance and medical amnesty have made this an important time for students in particular to have their votes counted for the mayoral and district attorney elections.

These elections will decide how we deal with everyday issues in our own backyard. And with the recent passing of Bill Welch, mayor of State College for 15 years, there are some big shoes left to fill. This upcoming election will redefine the political landscape of State College in a new age.

Worried about the nuisance ordinance and how it might affect one's ability to throw any sort of gathering? Read up on Elizabeth Goreham and Joe Wakeley's opinions on the issue and make an informed decision in the polling booth.

What about criminal prosecution and sentencing? Michael Madeira or Stacy Parks Miller will majorly impact these issues. The outcome of the DA election will affect anyone affected by crime in Centre County, including students.

The point is don't lose election fervor. We aren't electing a new president, but that shouldn't make one less excited. When it comes to local elections, one vote isn't just a drop in the bucket -- a common and frustrating sentiment during election time. Your vote in these elections truly does matter, so be sure to get to the polls.
