PSU looking to move forward

All Cathy Quilico knew about John Wooden is that UCLA named a gym after him.

Teammate Alyssa D'Errico knew about Wooden, but only to the extent that her mother is a fan of his coaching techniques.

Now that the Penn State women's volleyball team has tied the mark of 88 consecutive wins set by Wooden's UCLA basketball team, the Lions are still getting used to being mentioned in the same breath as the coaching legend and the team that took the college basketball world by storm from 1971-74.

"If you're in coaching and your name and John Wooden's name is in a conversation, you pinch yourself for sure," Lions' coach Russ Rose said.

"He's 99 years old and what he did in men's basketball was very neat in that time."

Still, Rose and his players are ready to move on from all of the hoopla surrounding the winning streak and focus on the rest of the season.

There are still eight games remaining on the schedule, and D'Errico and her teammates are approaching each game the same they have been every season. Even leading up to the Minnesota match, the win that gave the Lions their 88th straight, D'Errico said the team was not aware of the situation.

She had to be reminded by the boosters earlier in the day.

"I have no idea what our record is," D'Errico said after Friday's match. "I know we haven't lost, that's the one thing I do know. It's just match to match. Whoever the next team we play, that's the one that matters."

D'Errico went on to say that she was aware of what Wooden had accomplished at UCLA but did not realize that the Lions were in reach of that mark. Her mother, a club volleyball coach, made her players read a book about Wooden and tries to instill the coach's views on life and sport to her young volleyball players.

But rather than dwell on the winning streak, D'Errico said her knowledge of Wooden makes her appreciate her own coach even more.

"[Wooden] is the reason they did what they did, just as Coach is the reason we're doing what we're doing," D'Errico said about Rose.

Like the players, Rose is taking this season as he has every other season in his 31 years -- one game at a time.

The coach, while happy his team has accomplished a historic goal, is not taking time to reflect on anything just yet. He knows there is a lot of volleyball left to play, and he has to get his team ready to contend for another national championship.

"I understand that there's times when you're on top and there's times when you're trying to get up there," Rose said. "I don't stop to smell the roses because there's other teams out there we've got to try to beat."
