Hazing claim under review

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) suspended the new member education programs of Alpha Epsilon Pi and Pi Kappa Phi fraternities Monday in response to hazing allegations.

The fraternity members are not permitted to have any contact with their new members while the investigation is ongoing, IFC President Luke Pierce said.

The no-contact policy is in place to protect the integrity of the investigation, Pierce (senior-economics) said.

No criminal complaints have been filed against either fraternity, according to a statement released Monday by the IFC.

IFC Vice President for Standards Chris Smith and Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life Roy Baker will discuss the allegations with the chapters' officers, alumni associations and national fraternities.

If the fraternities are found to be in violation of IFC policy on hazing by the IFC Peer Review Board, they will undergo a series of "rehabilitative exercises to strengthen Chapter practices," the statement read.

Full confidentiality regarding the details of the events in question is to be maintained by all parties during the investigation, IFC Vice President for Communications Zach Meli (senior-economics) said.

Pi Kappa Phi President Adam Wnuk (sophomore-business administration) described the situation as "up in the air" Thursday.

"It's an ongoing investigation with the IFC," he said Thursday. "We're working with them however we can to remedy the situation and we're going to take preventative measures to make sure the situation never arises again. As of now, there has been no closure."

When reached by The Daily Collegian on Monday, Wnuk declined to comment further on the matter.

"Whatever they said is probably the best thing to be said right now," he said.
