Goreham encourages students to vote

Democratic mayoral candidate Elizabeth Goreham stopped by the HUB-Robeson Center this morning to encourage students to vote for her in today's municipal elections.

Goreham said her day has been busy -- she has been out since 5 a.m. putting up signs and visiting the polling districts. Throughout the day, Goreham said she has received positive feedback and many "nods, waves and smiles."

Apart from the positive feedback, Goreham said she was sorry to see there were no lines at the Paul Robeson Cultural Center's Heritage Hall when she was in the HUB at about 11 a.m. She added that there had not been any lines at any of the polling locations she has visited.

"It's pretty pathetic," Goreham said about voter turnout.

Goreham said she is not as dependent on the student vote as her Republican opponent Joe Wakely, but rather she is more split between the town people and students.

Julianne Hagarty (senior-environmental systems engineering) said she voted for Goreham today because "Goreham would make a fantastic mayor."

"[Goreham] has a strong stance on protecting the environment and getting the community to think on its toes," Hagarty said. "She has her finger on the pulse of State College."

Though Goreham said she is nervous about the turnout, she will eagerly await the results at Rotelli's, 252 E. Calder Way, with her campaign team and husband.

"We'll be there eating pizza, drinking beers and checking the results," Goreham said.
