Icers control WVU in weekend sweep

No Taylor Cera, no Matt Kirstein, no problem.

With two of the Penn State Icers missing this weekend's action with injuries, the Icers responded with a sweep of No. 25 West Virginia.

First it was a 10-1 rout on Friday night that was capped off with a Ryan Paradis goal at the third-period buzzer.

Less than 24 hours later, Penn State picked up where it left off, crushing the Mountaineers 8-2 and putting together what Icers coach Scott Balboni believes was their most consistent and complete weekend of the season.

"I thought we played hard for the entire weekend," Balboni said.

"I thought we did our job in some situations where it's hard to concentrate and stay on the gas pedal. I thought we did that for the most part, so I was

pretty proud, pretty happy with that."

Penn State was powered by a tenacious defensive effort that stifled the Mountaineer offense throughout the weekend.

Over the two games, West Virginia was held to 32 total shots as the Icers limited possessions and kept the puck out of their zone.

Despite that effort, Penn State wouldn't say it had reached its peak as a unit.

"I wouldn't say it was our best weekend, because I know we have more potential in us more," defensemen Steve Thurston said.

Thurston said the Icers' defense had too many breakdowns in the system, especially handling the puck behind their net, that led to Mountaineer goals during the weekend.

On the flip side, Penn State compiled 99 shots over the two games. The Icers peppered West Virginia goalie Chris Wilder all weekend long. Wilder gave up 16 of Penn State's 18 goals.

Twelve different Icers found their way into the goal column over the weekend as Penn State dominated the offensive side of the ice.

This weekend has the Icers believing they are starting to gel as an offense.

"We've been going with the same lines the past couple of weeks, and I think guys are starting to settle into the situations we've been in lately," forward Tim O'Brien said.

"It's a good thing whenever you've been practicing and playing the same guys and hopefully we can continue our success offensively."

However, those lines may not stay together for long.

During Saturday's game, forwards Kurt Collins and Nick Seravalli left the game with injuries.

Collins hurt his shoulder on a play where he was tripped by West Virginia forward Brent Hart and fell into the boards. Collins stayed down for a short period of time before heading to the

bench and eventually the locker room.

Seravalli took a puck off the hand in the second period and went straight to the bench shaking his hand. Seravalli returned to the ice but did not play in the third period.

Both players are set to undergo tests and their status and recovery time is unknown.
