A 25-year-old man told authorities he accidentally shot his girlfriend Saturday, whose body was found that night with a bullet wound about 30 minutes from Penn State's campus.
Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said the woman, Racheal Lynn Perryman, was dating Troy Tierney at the time of her death in Black Moshannon State Forest in Union Township. Penn State officials said Tierney is currently listed as a student at the university.
The Pennsylvania State Police at Philipsburg did not name the 25-year-old they described in their search warrant application regarding the death of 21-year-old Perryman, but they did describe the man as Perryman's boyfriend, according to the warrant.
The coroner has yet to rule the manner of Perryman's death, Madeira said.
Perryman's boyfriend called 911 at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and told them his 21-year-old girlfriend had been shot with a muzzleloader, police said.
State police did not release the name of the boyfriend Thursday and are continuing to follow up on leads, Pennsylvania State Trooper Jeff Petucci said.
"We haven't released a name of any type of suspect," he said.
The boyfriend told police that he and Perryman had entered the woods at about 5 p.m. Saturday and the shooting had occurred sometime after dark, according to the warrant. He also told police he did not consume alcohol but did ingest prescription medication prior to the shooting, according to the warrant.
Further investigation also revealed there may have been a history of domestic violence between Perryman and the boyfriend, the warrant states.
Police seized a plastic garbage bag, two blood-soaked Centre Daily Times pages, a hunting light kit, CVS Pharmacy prescriptions, two blood-soaked tissues and a small green notebook, according to the warrant.
Court records show Tierney was assigned a public defender earlier this week, although authorities would not disclose why.
Court documents from a rape case also identify Tierney as Perryman's boyfriend. Perryman told police in January she was raped by Kyle Lingle, 21, in August, 2008 at Lingle's residence. Lingle, of Milesburg, is charged with rape and sexual assault, according to court documents.
The case is scheduled to go to trial in the coming months and Madeira said no changes have yet been made.
"We are reviewing the appropriateness to continue in that case with the evidence that's available to us," Madeira said. "That decision has not been made."
Madeira said he discussed Perryman's death with police earlier this week and has plans to meet again next week.
Tierney's friend Chris Showers said Tierney was not the type of person to shoot someone intentionally. Showers, who grew up with Tierney, said friends are talking about Perryman's death.
But Perryman "meant everything" to Tierney, he said.
"This girl was his world," Showers said. "He's a pretty goofy kid, but he would never do anything like that."
