Leaders weigh in on gift options

Student body president Gavin Keirans isn't thrilled with the 2010 Senior Class Gift options.

So he tweeted about it, writing "Tough choice for class gift ... log sculpture or aquarium maintenance" in a Twitter post on Monday.

Other student leaders were also disheartened by the options: an oak sculpture and scholarship, a HUB aquarium maintenance endowment or a boardwalk at the arboretum.

"Are any of these going to live up to the Nittany Lion [Shrine]? Probably not," Keirans (senior-business management) said Thursday. Employees at the Palmer Art Museum would not agree with Keirans' tweet, said Chairman of the Senior Class Gift Committee Mike Lampariello.

"If he had a better understanding of culture and public art, he would know it is more than a log," Lampariello (senior-landscape architecture) said.

In retrospect, Keirans said the tweet was meant to be a joke. He still wishes there were more diverse options to choose from, although he's already made his decision -- the arboretum.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) President Luke Pierce said he endorses the HUB aquarium endowment, adding this is his endorsement and not the IFC's.

"Rarely will you find any student who hasn't met someone at the aquarium," Pierce (senior-economics) said. "It has really been iconic in my Penn State experience."

University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) Director of Assembly Services Samantha Miller said she also supports the aquarium endowment.

"I want to ensure that future generations have the aquariums as part of their Penn State experience, too," Miller (senior-political science) said.

On the other hand, Council of Commonwealth Student Governments President Nick Borsuk supports the arboretum boardwalk. He's encouraging every senior he knows to vote.

"I think it's important to jump on board with a big project of the university," Borsuk (senior-history) said of expanding the arboretum. "Last year's choices were better as a whole, though I think the arboretum is a better choice than any of last year's."

Student leaders had mixed feelings about the gifts' potential.

Pierce said the three options were all "excellent" and he feels the senior class gift committee did a great job in their research.

Borsuk said the sculpture and scholarship and the aquarium endowment are interesting, though he wouldn't say they'd be a lasting legacy.

But Keirans expressed disappointment in the aquarium option, seeing it as his class being stuck with the bill for maintenance.

"I wish the Class of 1999 would have had the foresight to set something up for the aquarium's future," he said.

Jordan Ford, the assistant director of the Office of Annual Giving, said he hopes students who are not satisfied with the selection will contribute to the process.

"We welcome proposals from anyone, and we are always looking for good ideas," Ford said.
