Volé raises funds with food

Before pirouettes and stage debuts, Volé dancers will scoop ice cream at Coldstone Creamery tonight to raise money for their fall performance.

This is Volé's first fundraiser this fall, although its members hope to have more in cooperation with Five Guys, Snappy's and the Beaver Stadium cleanup, said Melanie Angle, social chairwoman for Volé.

A percentage of sales from 6 to 10 p.m. at Coldstone Creamery, 321 E. Beaver Ave., will go toward the dance club.

"Some dancers will be at Coldstone making ice cream," Angle said. "We want to be a part of the fundraiser and actually do the work."

With the money, Volé will be able to provide dancers with new costumes, a venue for the show and keep performers' annual dues from increasing, Angle (junior- psychology) said. The group is also hoping to keep performances free for the public. Dance show equipment, costumes and venues can become rather pricey, with the overall cost ranging from $300 to $3,000, spokeswoman Emily Simmons (senior-public relations) said. The fundraiser will specifically benefit Volé's Nov. 15 performance in the Paul Robeson Cultural Center's Heritage Hall. Titled "A Night at The Movies," it will be the group's only show this semester. Audience members may be familiar with the tunes, selected from movies including Juno, The Boondock Saints and Rent.

Angle said the theme is different for every show, and since Volé doesn't buy costumes often, it will be exciting for performers to put on their fall show with fresh clothes. Volé is a large dance organization with more than 100 members, Volé Vice President Shannan McCormick said. The group is getting involved with the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon for the first time in 2010.

"We are strictly ballet, and we have placements instead of auditions, allowing anyone from any level to join the group," McCormick (senior-kinesiology) said.

Since the dance club is student-taught and student-run, members have to pay a fee to take one of the four ballet or two pointe classes a week, plus an extra fee if they dance in the show.
