Power back on at East Halls

Power outages in East Halls have been fixed by the Office of Physical Plant (OPP), and buildings in the dorm complex have regained power.

OPP spokesman Paul Ruskin said there are extra emergency workers on campus for today's football game, making it easier to deal with the issue in East.

The power went out at about 11:45 a.m. and was fixed by workers at about 2:30 p.m. The outage was caused by melting snow that leaked into the power lines, Ruskin said.

Janice Lanpz, a spokesperson for Allegheny Power, the company that supplies Penn State with electricity, said many customers in the State College area are still dealing with power problems caused by the weather.

"We still have a lot of reconstruction from the snow storm," she said.

Matt Wolfson (freshman-mechanical and nuclear engineering) said he tried to eat lunch at noon today in Findlay Commons but was unable to because of the outage.

"I had to walk all the way to Pollock in the cold, and I was not prepared for that," he said.

Other students had similar complaints. Some were forced to shower in the dark while others were unable to eat in the dining hall.

Ruskin said the campus is usually immune to the effects of ice storms because Penn State runs the power lines underground. He said animals usually cause the damage.

"Especially in weather like this, small, furry animals are looking for somewhere warm, and they sometimes go where we have machinery," he said, adding that Penn State's squirrel population did not lose a member today.

OPP made the needed repairs, he said, and is continuing to monitor the issue.
