Students celebrate PSU's past

Maria Navarro wrapped an arm around Christina "CriCri" Henry for a photo in the HUB-Robeson Center on Tuesday -- but instead of hugging her friend, Navarro was embracing Henry's life-size cardboard likeness.

Cardboard cut-outs of the 10 members of the Homecoming court were positioned around a voting station in the HUB as part of the annual Homecoming Past to Present celebration.

Computers were set up for students to vote for Homecoming king and queen at homecoming.psu.edu. Voting started Monday and will be open until 3 p.m. Friday.

"I know her from way back," Navarro (senior-accounting) said of Henry (senior-public relations and international politics). "I already voted."

The HUB was decorated from its Pollock Road entrance on the first floor to the HUB lawn entrance on the ground floor.

The main staircase sported pink and black balloons and horseshoes at the top -- an homage to Penn State's original colors and mascot, Old Coaly, -- and blue and white balloons and paw prints at the bottom.

Booths were set up throughout the day on both the ground and first floors of the building, showcasing displays of past Homecoming themes and selling Homecoming merchandise.

Dance performances, a Homecoming court merchandise fashion show, singing performances, a stand-up comedy performance and an athlete hour entertained passers-by during the day.

"The whole idea is to get people excited for Homecoming," said Carter Satterfield (senior-energy, business and finance), a Homecoming court member. "We're just celebrating where it's starting and where it's going."

Organizations had the opportunity to gain a maximum of 10 spirit points per Homecoming pair by sending members to participate in a scavenger hunt.

Students participating in the scavenger hunt were asked to examine the displays to find the answers to questions such as, "What was the Homecoming theme in 1991?"

"I'm pledging," said Kate Beck (freshman-education), a prospective member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. "We have responsibilities. We have to go to all of the spirit point ones because it helps our organization."
