Tim Brewster loves head coaching, but 44 years is a long time.
"I don't know that my body is gonna hold up as well as Joe's [Paterno] has. He's an amazing guy," the Minnesota head coach told reporters on Tuesday. "He's just an amazing guy, and will probably go down in history as the greatest college football coach of all time."
Brewster is in the middle of his third season with the Golden Gophers but will be matching up against the Penn State head coach for the first time this weekend.
Off to a 4-2 start, Minnesota has gotten the majority of its offensive yards through the air thanks to the presence of wide receiver Eric Decker, who has 689 yards this season.
But against Purdue last week, the Gophers threw the ball only 10 times and posted 207 rushing yards. The trio of Duane Bennett, DeLeon Eskridge and Kevin Whaley combined for 176 yards and the three touchdowns in the win, but none of the three has ever faced the Nittany Lions.
Despite going up against a top-notch defense in Penn State, Brewster continues to strive for balance.
"This week we'll see how the elements are gonna be," Brewster said. "It's supposed to be cold and raining, so obviously the ability to run the football is gonna be very important."
QB Uncertainty
Ron Zook will continue to play the waiting game.
Illinois has been plagued by an inconsistent offense so far this season, prompting a quarterback controversy. Eddie McGee got the start against Michigan State last week before Juice Williams came off of the bench.
McGee threw for 31 yards and an interception while Williams passed for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Regardless, Zook isn't making a commitment as to which one starts against Indiana on Saturday.
Instead, the Fighting Illini coach acknowledged the importance of the duo's leadership.
But when it comes to what he's looking for at the position and for the rest of the team, it's consistency.
"I think it's an important thought that we continue to evaluate this," Zook said. "I was very pleased with the way both of them supported each other. I know Eddie was very down after the game and rightfully so, but those guys were both there at practice last night. In fact, I made them both captains."
Forcier deals with injuries
Tate Forcier's shoulder is no longer much of an issue, but the concussion remains one.
"The biggest issue now is that concussion and I think he has a little bit of a whiplash or something because he took a good shot," Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez said during his Tuesday conference call.
The true freshman quarterback has passed for 988 yards with nine touchdowns passing and two rushing scores so far this season.
The Wolverines have lost two straight games heading into the final nonconference game of the season this Saturday against Delaware State.
Rodriguez said Forcier is day-to-day and that the shoulder isn't very limiting. But the coach expects the doctors to test the signal caller daily and go from there regarding the concussion.
