The bands playing at tonight's Roustabout! are cut from the same banjo string.
The show will feature The Kalob Griffin Band and The Threadbare Orchestra, two bands with sounds influenced by Americana and folk music.
The concert begins at 10 tonight at the Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave. The cover price for the show will be $5.
Roustabout! promoter Jesse Ruegg said he purposely booked the bands to play tonight because of their similar styles.
"We were going for an Americana-folk rock kind of night, and these two bands fit that bill exactly," Ruegg said.
Kalob Griffin, guitarist and vocalist of The Kalob Griffin Band, said he got into Americana simply by acquiring the same musical tastes of his friends and family.
The main songwriter for the group, Griffin said this kind of music has lyrics that actually convey human emotions.
"There is so much power behind the music songs that talked about real things that people still wanted to listen to," Griffin said.
The Threadbare Orchestra is made up of graduate students who met at Penn State, Colin Jones, guitarist and vocalist for the band, said.
Jones said he got into folk and Americana music after finding that being a singer/songwriter was too boring for his tastes.
"The more options you have, it's more fun to play," Jones said.
The Americana aspect of the band is still there, but The Threadbare Orchestra is starting to move more into a mainstream and indie rock spectrum, Jones said.
"I wouldn't say we're a bygone-era kind of band," Jones said.
Both bands have large followings, Ruegg said -- The Threadbare Orchestra with graduate student fans and The Kalob Griffin Band with undergraduates.
Both bands said they think the evening will mesh well.
