Penn State Police report crimeless day on campus Sunday

Sunday was an unusual day for Penn State -- not a single crime was listed on the daily police log.

On Oct. 11 last year, several incidents were reported to the Penn State Police, including drug law violations, a stalking charge and a DUI. This Oct. 11, however, there were none.

No big deal, Penn State Police Deputy Director Tyrone Parham said -- having a crimeless day on campus is not that uncommon.

"This isn't the first time it's happened," he said. "I guess for us, it's really not that unusual ... it is relatively unusual, but it does happen."

Police reports indicate the last time there was no reported crime on campus was May 25.

Parham didn't know how often crimeless days pop up on campus. Though Oct. 11 being a Sunday probably contributed to the low level of activity, he suspects

that it's more of a "random occurrence" than anything else.

State College Police Department Capt. Dana Leonard agreed with Parham, timing is a major factor in having "slow days." In his experience, Sundays rank among the lowest points in the week in terms of criminal activity.

But while this type of report may be commonplace for campus police, it hardly ever happens in the rest of town, he said.

"There is a crime reported every day of the year," he said.

For the State College Police, this past weekend was nothing out of the ordinary, Leonard said. The Penn State football team took on Eastern Illinois University at Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

"It was about average for a big event weekend," he said. "It was not a quiet weekend by any means."

As far as "quiet days" go, there was only one that Leonard could recall throughout his time in service.

"Christmas," he said. "That's the only day that occasionally has no crime reported."
