Januskova begins Penn State career

Despite dropping her first singles match as a member of the Penn State women's tennis team, Petra Januskova began her college career with a bang Friday at the University of Kentucky Invitational.

Januskova and senior Lauren McCarthy advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A doubles tournament with victories in the opening and quarterfinal rounds.

Senior Sarah Lotto also picked up a victory for the Nittany Lions in the opening round of Flight C singles by defeating Andrea Voinea of East Tennessee State University in a tough three set match by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Also in Flight C was Sarah Henderson who dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Diana Navrotska (ETSU).

The only other victory for the Lions on day one of the tournament was by doubles pair Michaela Stracar and Sarah Henderson in the consolation quarterfinals of Flight B.

McCarthy also dropped her first rounds singles match in Flight A. Maria Prishlyak, who finished second in the first tournament of the year for the Lions, dropped her first round match in Flight B singles. Allie Hefter also dropped her first round matchup in Flight D for Penn State.

Januskova and McCarthy will continue their run at the the championship in Flight A doubles Saturday and Sunday in Lexington, Ky.
