Dodgeball registration begins for annual Thon competition

At 10 a.m., students will be able to register for the third annual Thon Dodgeball tournament, sponsored by Nittany Lion Basketball, a competition that has drawn more than 1,000 participants in the past.

Students should arrive promptly in order to secure their spot in the tournament, the athletics department said.

Registration will occur alongside the men's basketball season ticket sale, also occurring at 10 a.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center.

One hundred twenty-eight teams of seven players each are currently bracketed to compete in the Oct. 18 event.

But that number could increase to up to 192 teams, Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon Overall Finance Chairwoman Lauren Tucci (senior-finance) said.

Matthew Checchio, assistant marketing manager for Penn State Athletics, said 128 teams will be able to sign up Wednesday, and additional teams will be placed on a waiting list if the demand is high enough. Representatives of teams placed on the waiting list will be contacted if the tournament expands.

Tucci said 192 teams participated last year, raising $11,000 for Thon.

The participation fee for the competition is $60 per team, and all proceeds will benefit Thon.

Teams are organized in a typical tournament-style bracket, playing a series of three games against an opponent, with the best of three moving on to the next round.

The first, second and third place winners will receive prizes, which will include medals, men's basketball season tickets and all-access tours of Beaver Stadium.

The tournament will feature an appearance from the men's basketball team as well, Checchio said.

"Their first official practice date is two days before," he said. "So during their break between practices, they come and greet everyone and watch some of the games."

Tucci said each team chooses a team name and is encouraged to create a team uniform.

The dodgeball tournament will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the multi-sports center.

Checchio said he encourages participants to go to thondodgeball.com to see tournament and registration rules and details.
