In the Sept. 29 article "Simmons to close, students unhappy," Christine Simcox said, "It's a shame because it's the only place on campus you can get nutritional food ... Everywhere else is greasy and not as good quality."
What she said about other dining halls around campus was uncalled for. Yes, Simmons' menu does focus on healthier eating, but so do other dining halls.
For example, Waring has two salad bars, veg-works for vegan and/or vegetarian foods, a place for vegetarian yogurts, soy milks and fruits.
It also has two different kinds of soup, two different types of vegetables behind serving lines, etc. In addition, Sisu store, which is located in Waring Commons, provides organic and all natural food products.
Because Waring provides food service for many customers, it does have pizza, burgers, Chinese food, fries, etc. However that does not mean it serves "greasy" foods of "not as good quality." It's what the student chooses to eat when they come to Waring.
It provides healthy options for students to choose from. It's just that they can choose to eat those extra cookies and whatnot.
It is unfortunate that Simmons Dining Hall will close at the end of the spring semester.
Also, it's probably easier to eat healthier at Simmons because there is no temptation of going for those extra slices of pizza or fries.
However, you can still eat healthy at other dining halls, and what Christine said about other dining halls around campus is completely uncalled for.
