Fan leaves State Theatre in ambulance

Authorities doubled security at a sold-out downtown concert Monday night for a band police said is notorious for drawing riotous crowds.

One man was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center after he was "combative" with security officials at the Disco Biscuits concert at the State Theater, 130 W. College Ave., State College Police Department Lt. Chris Fishel said.

"We had a lot of extra eyes to make sure any problems were taken care of very quickly," State Theater Marketing Director Kristy Cyone said.

Police also responded to a report that concert-goers were inhaling the nitrous oxide that filled blue and white balloons outside of the theater, but the individuals were gone upon arrival, Fishel said.

Penn State student Sam Newman (senior-management) said he was surprised when police vehicles and an ambulance showed up during the show.

"During the intermission, I came outside and I was standing there smoking a cigarette, and four or five cop cars came up with an ambulance," Newman said. "They carried this guy out, and he was kicking and screaming."

Newman said the concert wasn't different from other shows, and the Disco Biscuits have a "monumental" sound with a "good feel" and a "good vibe."

Fishel said charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication are pending against the man. Cyone said the venue's officials were aware of the band's reputation.

"Obviously, there's going to be some of those types of shows that come up, but we take all of

the necessary precautions," she said.

"The fans were great as

always, we have the best fans in the world," said Drew Granchelli, marketing director for the Disco Biscuits.

Cyone said extra security officials were stationed by the stage to prevent fans from rushing the performing area, and security was also stationed at the front and back exits.

Whether the Disco Biscuits will be asked back to the State Theatre remains to be seen, but Cyone said she thought the concert was "fantastic."

"That's two sold-out shows they had this year," Cyone said.
