DeChellis receives three-year extension

Ed DeChellis received a three-year contract extension Thursday, six months after coaching the Penn State men's basketball team to a program-best 27 wins and first-ever National Invitation Tournament championship.

"We are very excited about the significant progress our men's basketball program has made under Coach DeChellis and are thrilled that he will continue to lead the program into the future," athletic director Tim Curley said in a press release. "Ed and his staff have brought tremendous work ethic, passion and energy to the program and the Penn State basketball community."

DeChellis was the media's choice for Big Ten coach of the year this past season after leading the Nittany Lions to a 10-8 conference mark.

He will begin his seventh season as the Penn State coach on Nov. 13, when the Lions open their season against Penn.

"I appreciate the commitment and enthusiasm for the men's basketball program that the Penn State administration and Tim have shown," DeChellis said in the release. "We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far and are focused on more goals ahead."

The extension will keep DeChellis as head coach through the 2013-14 season. Specifics of the deal were not disclosed.
