Wii game encourages healthy lifestyle

The sound of blaring techno music and laughter rang out from Pollock Commons on Monday night as students got a workout on the Wii.

Wii are Fit, an event organized by the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the Dance Dance Maniacs, encouraged attendees to maintain a healthy lifestyle using video games.

Rachel Davis (senior-nutrition) said there was a lot of interest from students leading up to the event.

"A lot of people saw the fliers and were asking me what it was about," she said. "They were really interested.

The event began with a discussion session led by the sorority members. Students discussed healthy food and exercise options on campus.

Then, students broke into groups to play games like Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Sports.

Michael Porter, vice president of Dance Dance Maniacs, said the games double perfectly as exercise.

Tanaya Lloyd (sophomore-kinesiology), who attended the event, echoed the sentiment.

"I just got a Wii, and it does work you out," she said.

Organizers of the event said they hope students who attended will come away with a fresh outlook on healthy living by introducing them to new ways of staying fit.

Delta Sigma Theta organizes several events like Wii are Fit throughout the year, Davis said.

"We usually try to hit certain areas of life, including health," she said. "We hit the health point in a fun way this time."

Porter (senior-electrical engineering) said the sorority approached his club to team up for the event.

"They reached out to us at the Involvement Fair," he said. "We were glad to help."

Davis said the sorority wanted to try something new and that Dance Dance Maniacs were great partners for the event.

"There is a new era of video games that help out with something new, and they apply physical activity," she said.'

Lloyd said that video games were a great way to work out without the cons of going to the gym.

"You have fun before you know you're exercising," Lloyd said.
