Police: Crime higher

Local police saw more incidents than is typical on a football weekend.

A Penn State student is in intensive care after being beaten by two unidentified men, a victim of one of the many incidents police encountered this weekend.

Police are looking for answers today after what State College Police Department Sgt. John Wilson called a "very, very busy" football weekend, including a separate incident in which a man told police he was threatened with a gun.

Police withheld the name of the injured male student, currently in intensive care at Mount Nittany Medical Center for a serious head injury. The student was taken to the hospital at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The student was intoxicated and "staggering" in the middle of the road along the 3500 block of South Atherton Street when two unidentified men got out of a silver sedan and began repeatedly punching him, Wilson said.

Less than two hours later, police responded to an unrelated incident involving terroristic threats and a gun.

A man told police he bumped into another man's girlfriend, and the woman's boyfriend then pointed a gun at him at about 4:20 a.m. Sunday on the 400 block of East College Avenue, the State College Police Department said.

When police arrived on the scene, the man said he didn't want to report the incident, police said.

"We'll have people look into it," Wilson said. "We were very, very busy this weekend -- especially the night shift officers. They were extremely active."

On Saturday morning, police said a bald, 5 foot 8 inch man with a heavy build assaulted a man and woman without provocation at about 4 a.m. on the 500 block of East Calder Way, State College Police Lt. Mark Argiro said.

A witness told police the man picked her up and slammed her to the ground. A 22-year-old man -- who did not know the 20-year-old woman -- then confronted the bald man, police said.

The bald man then "turned his wrath" on the man who confronted him, striking him several times before running from the scene, Argiro said.

Both the beaten man and woman refused medical treatment but then took a taxi to Mount Nittany Medical Center after authorities left the scene, police said. Argiro could not confirm whether the beaten man and woman are students.

Penn State students weren't the only ones who were struck by violence this weekend. A visiting Syracuse University student was punched in the mouth at about 4 a.m. Sunday outside Theta Chi fraternity, 523 S. Allen St., police said.

The student is a member of the Syracuse Theta Chi chapter and was visiting the Penn State chapter when an unidentified man punched him, police said.

The man fled the scene before police arrived, and the Syracuse student did not have serious injuries, police said.

Not everyone got away. A Penn State Altoona student was caught on surveillance video ripping emergency lights from the ceiling and then attempted to unplug the surveillance camera inside The Collegian apartment building, 217 S. Atherton St., police said.

Authorities reviewed surveillance video of the man's actions after the incident was reported Thursday, police said. Police would not release the man's name, as charges have not yet been filed.
